Kids and Cell Phones

Do not use the kajeet service while driving or riding a bike, skateboard, unicycle, moped or other vehicle.
- Kajeet Phones
The statement above is included with the new family-friendly phone we just received thanks to Mom Central cool blog tours This kajeet (pronounced kah jeet) phone’s tag line could easily be “A kid savvy design with parents in mind.” The phone is incredibly kid-friendly but the best news is it’s just as great for parents, too!
Parents- use it to your advantage
My “take home” message about cell phones and kids is this: enjoy all the benefits together. Personally, all three of our children have been allowed a phone when they turned the ripe old age of eleven years old. In our experience, allowing them to have a phone at this age has worked well. It has provided us, as parents, with a direct line of communication in times of need, and equally important, served as a great learning experience for our kids. Being allowed a cell phone at this age may appear premature for their age; however, we have found it to be a great way for our children to learn the principles of responsibility and the appreciation of value.
Teaching values and responsibility
I think the kajeet phone is a fantastic choice. Among the many parental advantages, my favorite feature for parents is the pay-as-you-go service. This means no contract, activation or termination fees. (Bonus: a child can dial 911 or his parent, even when his account is empty.) Parents customize the service to meet their families’ needs and kids learn to live with the facts; they can view how much money is their account, and so grow to understand something as concrete as, “how much money did it cost me to send that text message?” These options give your child a tool for implementing a real-life experience such as the value of money (learning how to budget his cash on minutes, texting or downloading a new game). A cool phone is another way of teaching your child how to be responsible for something of value. As of today, none of our children have ever lost a phone, and I am thinking this super new kid-friendly phone will be stay in my son’s backpack for quite a long time.
